Employee Spotlight - Jerry Morgan

The Highland Family

Name: Jerry Morgan
Position: Delivery Driver
Year Started With Highland: 1987

What brought you to Highland?
A friend of mine was working here a long time ago. He brought me on as a bread bagger, and I became a truck driver soon after that. He retired about eight years ago, but I just never left. They treat me right here. The people, the company, the bread…I really like it here.

What is your role at Highland?
I’m the first truck out the door every morning. I start my deliveries just before midnight and follow the same route every day, bringing in the new trays of fresh bread and taking out the empty trays. I enjoy the night routine. It’s just me, the bread                                                   and the road.

Can you think of a time Highland has gone beyond the call of duty for a customer?
A couple of times a customer has called and needed more bread after I had already delivered to them that day. Back in the beginning when I was one of the few drivers, I would just drop it off to them in my car on the way home. Now we have plenty of delivery trucks, so if a customer needs to add to their order, we can just put it on another truck. We always try to make sure our customers start their day out right.

What are some of the perks of your job?
Well, they let us take bread home at the end of the day if we want to, which I always do. In the twenty-two years I’ve been here, there was one time I forgot to bring it home. We bought some at the store but it just wasn’t the same. I haven’t made that mistake again.

Favorite Highland Bread?
Toasted Cracked Wheat for breakfast and Homestyle White for everything else.

Quick you’re making a sandwich. What sandwich? What bread?
Homestyle White, lettuce, tomato, mayo and ham. Now that’s a sandwich.
