March Bread of the Month:
Irish Soda Bread
You guessed it… Irish Soda Bread is the featured bread for March. But what is it about this St. Patrick’s Day favorite that makes it so special?
A little history...
Over the centuries, Irish bread makers have always had to take their climate into consideration. The Gulf Stream doesn’t allow the weather to get too hot or too cold, preventing certain types of wheat from prospering. So, in order to use the crops that were plentiful, home and commercial bakers had to find a rising agent that would work well with the wheat at hand.
That agent was baking soda (hence the name “soda bread”). The bicarbonate of soda was introduced to Ireland around 1840 and was a quicker, easier way to leaven their bread. Plus, you could bake it right over the fire in a casserole or iron pot, foregoing all that time in the oven.
Though it began as a necessary means of survival in the Emerald Isle, it’s now a celebrated staple, especially popular during the month of March!
Reasons we love it...
Our Soda Loaf is baked with caraway and a sweet touch of raisins. The delicious, nicely crusty composition naturally pairs well with traditional Irish fare, like corned beef & cabbage or colcannon, but it’s also great with stews, soups, braised meats or even served warm with butter and jam.
St. Patrick’s widely celebrated day of feasting wouldn’t be the same without this perseverant bread. So, add it to your breadbasket or menu this month and give customers another reason to celebrate the day, because in March, everyone’s Irish.
